Aaloo - Tamatar - Masoor Dal 

Masoor dal is the most common dal cooked in every home of India. Masoor lentils contain high level of proteins and dietary fiber. Aloo Tamatar Masoor Dal ( Potato Tomato Masoor Dal ) curry is a very easy recipe with a good blend of spices. Masoor dal is very easy to make and it is usually served with rice and chapattis. Ingredients for Dal :

Servings : 4

  • 1/4th cup masoor dal/lentils (rinse it)
  • Potatoes - 2 medium (peeled & diced)
  • Tomatoes - 1 finely chopped
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • Pinch of asafoetida (Hing)
  • Salt as needed
  • 4 cups of water
Ingredients for Tadka :
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • Pinch of asafoetida (Hing)
  • 2 tsp oil
  • 2 tsp crushed red chillies 
  • Chilli powder -1/2 tsp
  • Dhania Powder - 1 tsp
  • Cumin Powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Garam Masala - 1 tsp
  • 2 green chillies slit
  • 2 tsp oil
  • Onion - 1 medium size finely chopped
  • Coriander leaves to garnish

Method :
  1. In a pressure cooker add dal, diced potatoes and chopped tomatoes cook for 3 whistles along with turmeric, salt, hing & red chilli powder. Proportion of water must be 2 1/2 times more than dal.
  2. Allow pressure to release on its own.
  3. For tadka, Heat oil in a pan, add cumin seeds, mustard seeds, red chillies, when it splutters add finely chopped onions, ginger garlic paste, green chillies & asafoetida , 
  4. Add the pressure cooked mixture to the tadka & add red chilli powder, dhania powder, cumin powder, garam masala & salt. Saute for a minute. Cover & cook for another 2 mins on a low flame.
  5. Aaloo Tamatar Masoor Dal is ready. Garnish with coriander leaves & Serve Hot with rotis.
