Arisi Upma Kozhukattai

Arisi upma is made with raw rice & dal, Its a very easy & simple recipe one pot meal if you are looking for a filling breakfast or dinner. Here I have made another version which is an easier one with arisi noi (broken rice) It has no dal other than tempering.

Ingredients :

Servings - 4
  • Broken Rice - 2cups (After washing the raw rice, dry it completely and then grind coarsely, Make sure not to powder it finely)
  • Salt to taste
For Tempering
  • Oil - 3tbsp
  • Chana Dal - 1 tsp
  • Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp
  •  Asafoetida - a pinch
  • Dried red chillies - 6
  •  Curry leaves - 4-5

Method :
  1. Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds, chana dal, & Saute for a minute along with dried red chillies and curry leaves.
  2. You can add grated coconut along with it (if available) and saute for 3-4 minutes.
  3. Add 5 cups of hot water and needed salt.(The quantity of water will differ accordingly 2-2 1/2 cups of water for 1 cup of broken rice depending upon the quality of rice)
  4. When water starts boiling, lower the heat and add the broken rice slowly & keep stirring with your other hand.
  5. Lower the flame to medium and pressure cook for 2 whistles or cook in lowest heat for 2 whistles.
  6. Once done,Allow it to cool and make oval shaped balls and Steam cook the kozhukattais for 5mins.(You can use idli cooker or pressure pan for steaming. Do not use whistle for pressure pan while steaming).
