Poha Recipe | Flattened Rice Indian Breakfast | How to prepare Flattened Rice/ Kanda Poha/Aval Upma


For me, Poha is a childhood favorite. Although its a breakfast dish ,we used to have poha as an evening snack after school. Whether you make this poha recipe for breakfast, as a main dish or as a snack, its quick, filling, and tasty. Kanda poha is made with onions. This recipe is sort of two-in-one. You can add the potatoes if you like, if not, just stick with the onions. Let us see how to prepare Poha.

Ingredients :
Servings : 2

  •    Aval/Poha (flattened rice)- 2 cup
  •    Onion - 1 finely chopped
  •    Tomato - 1 finely chopped
  •    Green chili -1 finely chopped
  •    Ginger garlic paste - 1/2 tsp 
  •    Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
  •    Roasted peanuts - 2 tbsp
  •    Lemon juice - 1/2 tsp
For seasoning
  •    Oil -1 tbsp
  •    Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
  •    Cumin seeds/jeera - 3/4 tsp
  •    Hing - pinch
  •    Red chili powder -1 tsp
  •    Curry leaves few
  •   Coriander leaves for garnishing
Method : 
  • Wash poha 2 times with cold water and drain it immediately. Keep it aside.
  • Heat a tbsp of oil, add mustard seeds, when it splutters, add cumin seeds, hing, red chili powder and curry leaves.
  • Then add finely chopped onions, ginger garlic paste, green chilies, turmeric powder and salt. 
  • Saute until onions turn translucent.
  • Then add poha/aval, roasted peanuts and mix well. Cook for 2-3 seconds and remove from flame.
  • Squeeze a few drops of lemon juice and mix well.
  • Garnish with coriander leaves & Serve hot!!
