South Indian Style Tomato Rice

Tomato Rice Recipe / Thakkali Sadam is a quick lunch which can be made in a hurry. Whenever I run out of lunch menu ideas or feel lazy to cook my life saver is this Tomato Rice.You can have this rice with simple raitha and surely have a delicious filling meal. The flavour of the ginger garlic, the tanginess in the tomatoes blend with spices, and also the red vibrant colour makes this South Indian tomato rice tastes great.This gets ready in 30 mins. You can prepare this either with freshly steamed rice or leftover steamed rice. You can pack this while going for outing along with other variety rice like lemon or tamarind rice. I have already posted the lemon rice recipe in my blog. Now let us see how to prepare Tomato Rice.

Ingredients :
Servings : 2-3
For Tempering :
  • 1 tbsp ghee
  • 1/4th tsp Mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp Chana dal
  • 1 tsp Urad Dal
  • Curry Leaves few
  • Hing/Asafoetida - pinch
  • 1 Dried red chilli 

For Tomato Rice :
  • Basmati Rice - 1 cup, Soaked for 15-30 mins (You can use normal rice too)
  • 1 Onion medium  finely chopped
  • 3 Tomatoes  medium finely chopped
  • 3 Green Chilies - Slit into halves
  • 1 tsp Ginger Garlic Paste
  • ½ tsp Turmeric powder
  • 1½ tsp Chili powder 
  • ½ tsp Garam Masala Powder
  • Salt to Taste
  • 3 tbsp oil
  • Few Coriander leaves to Garnish
Method :
  1. Heat oil in a pan, add finely chopped onions. Saute for few minutes till it turns golden brown.
  2. Then add chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, chilli powder, green chillies, Ginger garlic paste, salt as needed &  garam masala masala powder. Cook till tomatoes turn mushy.
  3. Add the cooked basmati rice & mix well.
  4. Now for tempering, heat ghee in another pan add mustard seeds, chana dal, urad dal, curry leaves, hing, dried red chili. Saute for a 2-3 seconds & then pour it above the cooked tomato rice mixture & mix well. 
  5.  Garnish with coriander leaves & Serve it hot along with raita.
