 Palak Dal Fry (Spinach & Mixed Dals)

Palak Dal Fry also called as dal palak/spinach dal, is very healthy, nutritious, tasty and easy to make dal recipe. Palak dal as the name suggests it is made with a combination of spinach and dal. Spinach dal is a wonderful combination of spinach, lentils and garlic. This palak dal tastes great with  both roti and rice. Here I have used a combination of Toor Dal, Moong dal and Chana dal for making dal curry, You can use moong dal or a mix of both moong and toor dal. Let us see how to make palak dal gravy/curry recipe.


Ingredients :
Servings : 4

For  Spinach Gravy
  •    Palak/spinach - washed and chopped -  1 cup
  •    Moong Dal- 1/4th cup
  •    Toor Dal  - 1/4th cup
  •    Chana Dal - 1/4th cup  (Or Mix of all 3 dals - 1 cup)
  •    Turmeric powder -1/4 tsp 
  •    Chilli powder - 3/4 tsp
  •    Dhania Powder - 2 tsp
  •    Garam masala - 1 tsp
  •    Onion - 2 medium size
  •    Tomato -1
  •    Ginger Garlic Paste - 1tsp
  •    Green chilli -2 finely chopped
  •    Salt as needed
For seasoning 
  •    Oil - 2 tbsp
  •    Jeera seeds -1 tsp
  •    Red chilli -1 crushed 
  •    Hing -a pinch
Method :
  1. Wash dal well & before cooking the dal soak it in hot water for 15-20 minutes. 
  2. Add turmeric powder, salt & add water to the dal in the ratio 1:3. For ½ cups of dal, add 1 ½ cups of water, Pressure cook for 3 whistles allow the pressure to release on its own & mash the dal well  
  3. Keep all the ingredients ready including cooked dal. Pressure cook spinach for 1 whistle. After the pressure subsides, open and mash it well.
  4. Heat oil in a pan or kadai, add the ingredients mentioned under seasoning in the same order.
  5. Add onions, ginger garlic paste, green chilli and saute till onions become light brown.
  6. Add finely chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, chilli powder, dhania powder, garam masla and cook till tomatoes become mushy.
  7. Then add the cooked palak, cooked dal, needed salt, mix well, adjust the required consistency with water and bring everything to boil. 
  8. Serve hot with chapati or hot steamed rice it tastes heavenly!!
