Quick & Easy Drumstick Sambhar | Murungakkai Sambhar

Drumstick Sambhar 

Murungakkai/Drumstick Sambhar is very popular South Indian recipe which is usually served with idly, hot steamed rice, dosa and vada. You can use any mix vegetables of your choice for this recipe.  This is a healthy, nourishing & one of my favourite recipe. 

Ingredients :

Servings : 4

Pressure Cooking Ingredients
  • Toor Dal - ½ cup
  • Tomatoes - 1 medium size finely chopped
  • Onion - 2 finely chopped
  • Cumin seeds - 1 tsp
  • Garlic - 2 cloves (optional)

Other Ingredients :
  • Ghee - 2 tbsp
  • Fenugreek seeds - 1/4th tsp
  • Mustard seeds - ½ tsp
  • Cumin seeds - 1/4th tsp
  • Curry leaves - 1 sprig
  • Asafoetida / Hing - a pinch
  • Chilli powder - 1 tbsp
  • Coriander / Dhania powder - 1 tbsp
  • Sambhar powder - 1 tbsp
  • Turmeric powder - ½ tsp
  • Drumsticks - 2 (cleaned & chopped into 3 inch pieces)
  • Tamarind - half a lemon sized ball (soaked in warm water for 20 mins.)
  • Salt - 1 tbsp
  • Coriander leaves for garnishing


Method :


  • Add ½ cup of toor-dal, finely chopped onions, tomatoes, cumin seeds and garlic (optional) with 3 cups of water in a pressure cooker for 5 whistles together along with little salt. Set aside. Soak half lemon size tamarind in one cup of hot water for 15-20 minutes. Squeeze & Extract the juice & Keep aside.
  • Clean the drumsticks. Chop them to 2-3 inch pieces. Set aside.
  • Heat ghee in a pan, Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, fenugreek seeds and curry leaves. Once it splutters, add asafoetida, chilli powder, coriander powder, sambhar powder and turmeric powder. Fry for few seconds. Add 1 cup of water and the drumsticks.
  • Add in the tamarind juice to the pan & add required salt. Let it boil for 10-15 minutes cook until the drumsticks are soft.
  • Mash the dal and the tomatoes in the pressure cooker with a ladle and add it to the pan. Keep it in a low flame for 15 minutes.
  • Switch off the flame and garnish with coriander leaves & Serve Hot!!


  • Serving Suggestions :

    • Serve with white rice & along with any fried vegetable.
    • Serve with idly, dosa or vada.
